HOW DOES PDT WORK?
Levulan is a painless topical solution that contains Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA). ALA is a natural product found in the body which is readily absorbed by damaged skin, but not absorbed by healthy skin cells. The solution is photosensitive and is activated by a light source which leads to the destruction of the abnormal skin cells. Dr. Christine will place you on a regimen prior to procedure day in order to maximize the results of your PDT.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON DAY OF PROCEDURE?
Levulan is applied to the affected area of the skin after it has been thoroughly cleansed. Solution is applied and left on for 45-60 minutes to absorb into cystic acne, sebaceous gland (oil gland), and abnormally pigmented skin cells. Once solution is absorbed, Dr. Christine activates the Levulan by using a light source that results in the selective destruction of abnormal skin cells. Results will be seen after the 1st session. Depending on your skin type and condition, Dr. Christine may recommend additional sessions. On average 2 or 3 treatments at 3 week intervals will show the best results.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER PROCEDURE?
Dr. Christine schedules PDT procedures in the early evening hours in order to minimize side effects of the procedure. Side effects may include skin redness, tightness and mild flaking or peeling. Dr. Christine prescribes topical medications that speed up the healing process as well as minimize downtime. Patients are advised to avoid direct or indirect sunlight for 48 hours post procedure and usually resume normal activity within 2-3 days. Once peeling process is complete, a new fresh layer of healthy skin is revealed. Patients who wish to maintain their beautiful results schedule a yearly session thereafter.
